Receiving a scholarship has literally paved the way for me to finally be able to better myself, have a career that I am proud of, help people in their time of need and help support my family. Having a scholarship pushes me and gives me the motivation to work even harder.

As a graduate and changemaker I will do the following if I can:

1. Helping Neighbors
Every day, there are people around you who may be going through difficult times without you even knowing it. Their problems could be financial, physical, or psychological. In fact, loneliness is a growing issue that is often difficult to detect. By taking some time to get to know your neighbors, you can find out more about the challenges they face and develop ways to help them. Whether the solution is planning a budget, doing some grocery shopping, or even having a brief chat, a little effort can make a large difference in their lives.

2.Donate Stuff
There are more ways to help the community than by just contributing your time or money. Even by donating your unwanted possessions, you could be helping someone in need. Consider donating unwanted items to charity shops, or contributing unused food to a food bank.

3.Volunteer
Participating in volunteering activities is one of the most fulfilling ways to help the community i.e. visiting hospital patients and helping them acquire better diagnosis where possible. By committing to a shared activity, you get the opportunity to meet other people and make new friends. Volunteering with other people will also help you to improve your social skills.

During the next six months I will:
- Apply for practicing license from the governing body
- Applying for available job opportunities
- Looking out for masters scholarships

In my community I have dedicated my time to teaching young children about the way they can avoid un necessary illnesses through having medical class to talk about prevention of diseases every Thursday and some Fridays and am glad they are doing well.

Me together with other class mates will conduct a research, health related to improve the lives of people suffering from diabetes especially by  establishing gaps in health care delivery in selected health facilities around Mbarara city. We have already standardized the questionnaire of our research by asking diabetic patients in the various health facilities and the research will be conducted  in July.

My worry as a person in the medical field is the growing number of illnesses of which the government supplies to major hospitals remains low compared to the increasing burden of diseases on people. And yet even when the supplies are met, few are freely given to patients increasing cost on top of disease on the patient. Therefor what I want to change is to lead a corrupt free health lineage in my country Uganda so that even the lowest person gets access to good health.

Currently, I am conducting a 90 days project regarding Eye health and the prevention of avoidable blindness. So far we have done 10 days of the campaign, and in this campaign, we talk about several conditions which can cause blindness and how they can be prevented. I am working with a team of 5 other individuals and the project will run till August. We will be pinning posters about blindness and going over the radio and TV stations to promote eye health awareness.

What worries me is poverty. I find poverty a very detrimental aspect and hindrance in the development of the world. Several individuals and families cant progress to achieving anything because of poverty. I would want to try my best and see that the chain of poverty is broken. I hope to set up some projects that will promote uptake of individuals for employment as well as creating production of commodities to be utilised in the community.

I would think of setting up projects like demonstration farms. These would not only be used to provide employment opportunities to community individuals but also act as food supply sources. In the end we will be dealing with un employment and hunger. Hitting two birds with one stone. The farms can be multidimensional with both livestock and agriculture.  I am planning to save some money that I will use to purchase some land. This land can then be gazzeted and developed by construction of several houses and livestock paddocks. The land can then be used for cultivation and livestock keeping.

My name is Namiyingo Caroline, a second- year student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. This semester we are going to carryout an awareness of Help to Help Scholarship to students at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. It is going to be held on 29/05/2021.

In this decade, environmental degradation has become a threat to the world. This has led to different dangerous changes in environmental conditions including alteration in organisms natural habitats. This has increased dangerous disease outbreak including covid-19.

In this view, I want to increase awareness about dangers in destruction of the environment in favor for development. The awareness will include; encouraging people to plant trees, preserve the existing forests which are habitats to many organisms including wildlife and help in rain formation. I will carry out several surveys to get to know the extent at which people understand the value of environmental conservation. After knowing that, I will be able to instill in them the importances of preserving the environment. This will help minimise the rate at which radiations heat the earth in these years.

The Help to Help scholarship has empowered me with not only knowledge but also skills in the laboratory field. I have been able to diagnose disease infections both in hospitals and research laboratories. I volunteered before starting my internship(UVRI). After my internship, I will return to my community, volunteer at the community health center, continue health educating people who meet me in the lab about several disease infections and their preventive measures. I have been doing my internship at Uganda Virus Research Institute Entebbe since February. The internship is very okay and it is based on a contract for 6 months.

I have decided to join the other change makers here at the University in a project to create more awareness to needy students, both males and females about the Help to Help Scholarship Programme.  We shall have the outreach on 29th May at the University.  I chose this activity because we need to have more educated women in our society to reduce on women dependence on men which forces them stay in violent relationship.  Some women can't afford the expenses of staying in school and so they can apply and get sponsorship.

I am concerned about the increasing incidence of breast cancer among women in Sub Saharan Africa including Uganda. There is also increased mortality from the disease because women present to health facilities when the disease has advanced and prognosis is poor for advanced disease stage.

We need to create awareness about breast cancer and about other diseases that affect the breast. We need to inform the public about the causes and risk factors for each breast conditions. Also we educate them about signs and symptoms and where to get help. We need to train our health workers and equip them with skills as they are advocates and change agents. We need to address myths and misunderstanding our communities have about such illnesses.

As a result of my concern, I took up a project to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination among undergraduate female medical students at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Breast self-examination is important in low income countries for creation of " breast awareness ".  When a woman is breast aware she can easily detect any changes in her breasts and report to health facility early enough for proper management. Students and other health workers teach patients and clients about breast self-examination. Mammography is the most effective method of diagnosing breast cancer but it is expensive. Thats why we need emphasis on the knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination in our society.

What kind of community outreach activity are you planning to do this semester?

I plan to do a community sensitization about adherence to covid 19 standard operating procedures. I am doing this sensitization with a fellow Help to Help changemaker called Mulungi Priscillah N. We chose this activity because Uganda is now experiencing the second wave of Covid 19 and we have also noticed that people are now reluctant to following Covid 19 standard operating procedures for example wearing masks. We shall do this community engagement in our community of residence that is Taso village. We plan to do this sensitization on 27th May, 2021.

What worries you in the world and what can you do to change that?

Poor disposal of garbage - especially plastic has become a great concern. In Uganda for example people tend to dump rubbish even where it is not designated to be.

I think the government should set up strict laws against poor disposal of garbage. Serious punishments and fines should be put in place especially for those found at fault. Systems should also be set up inorder to do proper sorting of rubbish especially for plastics. Specific areas should be designated for disposal of rubbish and the necessary authorities should be in charge. Garbage that is biodegradable should be put to use as manure or used for energy production. Some garbage for example plastics can be recycled and put to better use. I will sensitize communities about the benefits of proper garbage disposal especially on soil fertility.

I will also do demonstrations to teach people how to sort rubbish that is biodegradable material from non-biodegradable. I will also be exemplary by picking up litter I come across as I move so that others can adopt the same method. I will also put up some posters indicating the dangers of poor garbage disposal. I will also advocate for campaigns to be done on garbage disposal for example a village cleaning campaign.

What kind of community outreach activity are you planning to do this semester?

As changemakers, Atwine Elizabeth and I are intending to carry out a community awareness program. This will sensitise people in our community about the new Indian variant of COVID-19 disease which is deadly and hitting Uganda as a second wave of COVID-19. We shall encourage people in our community to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures provided by the Ministry of health in order to reduce on the spread of the disease. The community awareness program will be carried out around our area of residence which is Taso village. We shall carry out the program on 27th May, 2021.

What worries you in the world and what can you do to change that?

What worries me the most in the world now is the unhealthy and reckless lifestyle people are living which causes their immunity to lower hence leading to quicker contraction and spread of disease. For example not eating a balanced diet and excessive use of drugs and alcohol, unhygienic practices like not washing hands after using a toilet or latrine..

There needs to be strict laws put by the government against drugs and alcohol abuse. There should be regular screening of all people to know those that are more susceptible to disease in order to protect them from the rampant spread of disease by government. The community leaders need to enforce general cleanliness of the villages and towns they lead by ensuring proper sanitation, good drainage systems and safe water sources. This will reduce on the number of infections in the community especially those that are caused by bacteria. Sensitation of the people so that they get to know of a healthy lifestyle for example eating a balanced diet, regular exercising and hygienic practices like washing hands after using a toilet or latrine.  I will always endeavor to keep my environment clean by regularly  making sure that I dispose off rubbish in the right places, picking rubbish  around my environment. I will also write charts reminding people in my community where the rubbish pits are, and also on toilets and latrines not to forget to wash their hands after every visit. I will also reach out to my community  members one on one giving them health tips so that they are aware of living better lives.

What kind of community outreach activity are you planning to do this semester?

I am planning to go out at to Mbarara Regional Referal hospital and do some cleaning in an attempt to keep my community tidy since the hospital neighbors my school.

What worries you in the world and what can you do to change that?

The level of air pollution especially from automobiles in third world countries.

Firstly strict laws especially against exportation of very old automobiles and also encouraging the use of good petroleum products from standard petrol stations.  Planting more trees and sensitizing people to buy petroleum from petrol stations that are of world standards.

What kind of community outreach activity are you planning to do this semester?

I am part of the group of Help to Help beneficiaries which will conduct an awareness seminar with needy female students at Mbarara University of Science and Technology encouraging them to apply for the Help to Help scholarship. I intend to have more female students recruited for the scholarship in the next cohort because there is a higher possibility of a female student to drop out of school due to monetary issues compared to males.

What worries you in the world and what can you do to change that?

The increasingly alarming numbers of cases of school-going adolescent girls who become pregnant before finishing school most especially in my country Uganda

Parents have a big role to play concerning the social and emotional aspects in their children's lives especially girls. This also includes showing these girls the benefits of education and motivating them that they can be better people in the country rather than becoming parents at a young age Encouraging young girls to abstain from sex until marriage so as to achieve their set goals.
Providing knowledge about sex education to school-going adolescent girls to make them aware of the ways one can get pregnant since some are ignorant about the whole issue.
Stating examples of prominent successful elite ladies that would be role models to these young girls so as to motivate them.
