BACKGROUND
I grew up with my family in Kyela, a small town located close to the Malawi border. My father worked as a court magistrate and was employed by the government. However his income had to cater for his ten children and his wife, leaving little to safe for the future. Government employees where allowed to send their children to good universities thus me and my oldest sister Neema got to study at the prestigious Tumaini University where I studied a three-year Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology and Tourism. My choice of degree was not a coincidence. Having grown up in a region with the spectacular Livingstone Mountains framing Lake Malawi where waterfalls and interesting wildlife could attract tourists, I felt that the opportunities where many. I wanted to learn how to preserve and maintain these environments and I wanted to teach my learning’s to others. During my final year of the Bachelors, I did field work at Matema Beach Lutheran Centre, a guesthouse in the lakeshore village Matema where I got to know Malin, the founder of Help to Help. We kept in contact and after a few years of trying to find jobs, I decided to study further and got admitted to a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management at Tanzania Institute of Project Management. Considering that my father had then retired, gaining his income by farming a small piece of land, he could not help to cover the school fee for me, his son. Help to Help decided to sponsor Solar who will finish his one year course in June 2014 hoping that his new skills will be beneficial and appreciated by employers.
