The access to basic education in Sub Saharan Africa has increased a lot in the last decade. However, the enrollment in higher education is still very low. In Tanzania, more than 81 % of children enroll in primary school. Yet, less than 4 percent proceed to higher education and 50 % of all employers in Tanzania rated education as being the biggest obstacle when hiring a candidate.

Our mission is to provide potential changemakers in East Africa with access to higher education and the opportunities and skills needed to secure employment. As our changemakers start contributing to society, their knowledge spreads and our impact grows exponentially. Our research shows that 85 % of our graduated students increase their family income, and 59 % support their siblings' education. We call this the Help to Help effect.

If a doctor is sent from overseas to work in Tanzania for a few months, that doctor will be able to treat a few hundred people. However, a Tanzanian doctor that has been provided with an education can treat thousands during his or her professional life. We believe that this is the best way to create sustainable change.

OUR MISSION

1. SELECTION
Students who have difficulties to financially afford university tuition fees apply for scholarships from Help to Help. Based on a requirement profile, we make a careful selection.
2. FUNDING
Our selected changemakers present themselves with their profile on our website. Help to Help's scholarship program is funded by partnerships with companies and philanthropists, as well as donations from private individuals.
3. STUDIES
The changemakers study and communicate frequently on our website, so that everyone can follow the students' progress at university and get to know what it is like to be a student in Tanzania and Uganda.
4. NETWORK
The changemakers participate in our Academy program and become part of our network. In this way they are preparing themselves for life after studies and the labour market.
5. GRADUATION
Depending on the choice of degree, our changemakers graduate after 3-5 years. As graduates, they are now ready to create positive impact in the society and share their knowledge.
6. WORK
Within one year after graduation, 89 % have an occupation they would not have got without the scholarship. They are able to support themselves, their families and contribute to their community.

PURPOSE COSTS
76 % of our resources are directly used for our core purpose - empowering young changemakers with education. Donations from crowdfunding, monthly donors and and partnerships are covering school fees for our students. The school fees are paid directly to the respective universities East Africa every semester and make up for a 65% of our purpose costs.

35 % of our funds are used for our Academy Program aiming to close the skills gap between students and the labour market which includes activities such as our IT boot camps.

15% of our funds are used for fundraising activities and for sustaining and building new partnerships that can increase our resources over time.
Administration COST
9 % of our funds cover administration cost such as accounting and auditing.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

In 2010, Help to Help’s founder Malin Cronqvist was doing volontaire work in Tanzania. During her stay, Malin began to wonder if there wasn’t a fundamental problem with the way traditional aid works.

If someone is ill, we send out doctors. If someone is hungry, we send food. What would happen, if we didn’t send anything at all?

On site in Tanzania, Malin saw enormous potential in the country, but especially so in the individuals who had become her friends - young adults who now had an uncertain future ahead of them. Everyone had big dreams and visions for themselves and how they wanted to change Tanzania.
But there was one big problem - how to afford the school tuition fees for further studies of higher education. From Sweden, Malin was indignant over scandals and money swindling in the development assistance industry. That is when she decided to build an organization based on transparency and self-help, with long-term societal effects as the goal.

Help to Help’s acclaimed crowdfunding concept was launched in early 2014 as part of our ambition to make it easier to contribute, as well as making it a more intimate and personalized experience. So far, Help to Help has enabled education for 619 students in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya of which 280 have graduated.
